                   RESEARCH

Educational experiences and pedagogical opportunities continue to thrive throughout the global community of music. The process of learning any musical instrument, at any age, has consistently yielded positive results in regards to enhancing cognition, adaptability, coordination, sociability, emotional wellness, and testable intelligence. Similarly, athletics have proven to cultivate a holistic model of good health, social skills, and team building. The beneficial convergence of both music education and athletic benefits defines the essence of the marching arts activity, which is the foundation of my research.

This progressive research addresses all forms of the percussive arts and identifies how educational and developmental value is inherently present within unique environments like marching bands, indoor percussion ensembles, drum circles, and drum corps. In many communities, there exists an especially limited sense of appreciation for marching ensembles due to the events for which they serve a “primary” function (i.e., athletics, ceremonies, parades, etc.). As a result, many prestigious high school, collegiate, and independent programs, as well as competitive marching arts organizations like DCI and WGI, become widely misunderstood and regarded as mere derivatives of athletic programs. Focusing mainly on marching percussion, this experience-based research explores the various functions and benefits of the percussive arts within the context of health, sociology, and education.
